Pattaya Mayor promises to end up scams

BANGKOK- Last week, a conference organized by Pattaya Mayor Itthipol Kunplone, highlighted once more the promise of authorities to crackdown on all various scams which are targeting visitors to Thailand’s most popular resort destination. The Mayor promised to crackdown efficiently the scams with the same results than the cleaning over a decade ago of Pattaya waters along the beach.
Pattaya receives over eight million tourists a year. From this number, 70% are foreigners, with the largest groups of travellers coming from China, Russia and India. By 2015, Patatya expects to accommodate some ten million of visitors per year.
In the last few years, fights among Russian mafias in the street of the city have reinforced the negative image of the resort destination, perceived by many tourists as an unsafe place to go. Scams have also contributed to tarnish the city’s image. Among the most famous is the rental of already damaged jet-skis. Despite warnings from media and local authorities, naive tourists continue to be ripped off as their deposit are being kept by unscrupulous jet-ski owners who threaten foreign visitors to call the police if they do not agree.
Acknowledging that fact, Mr. Kunplone announced to open in August in cooperation with Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports the first “ Pattaya Public Safety Centre” where tourists will be able to register their complaints and get assistance. Patatya will also be one of the first cities to benefit from the newly launched tourism court procedure, which speeds up judgment on non-violent crimes involving foreign travellers.
The Mayor also evocated future improvements in public infrastructure, including road and train transport. A new tunnel is currently being built to ease traffic along Pattaya’s main arteries in the city centre. Another plan moving forward is the construction of a high speed train between Pattaya and Bangkok which then will help reduce the time between both destinations to just an hour time. It should be completed within five years.
