A visit to Kampong Ayer Cultural & Tourism Gallery promises a fascinating insight into Brunei?s rich history that dates back to the 10th century, writes S Puvaneswary
WHY The B$3 million (US$2.2 million) gallery is meant to give visitors a unique glimpse into the history of Kampong Ayer, the world?s biggest settlement on stilts which has been in existence for over a thousand years.
Covering 565m2, the gallery also aims to preserve Brunei?s cottage industries and integrate them in the country?s economy. Developed and managed by Brunei Tourism, Kampong Ayer Cultural & Tourism Gallery opened in August 2009.
WHAT In keeping with its name, the gallery is shaped like a traditional village house and is also located on water, in Kampong Ayer. The artifacts on display are on loan from the Brunei Museum, with some dating back to the 10th century. Malay and English explanations of the artifacts guide the visitor through the exhibits.
The observation tower beside the gallery provides a fantastic 360-degree panoramic view of the unique water village.
What I liked best was the live demonstration of creating the gold or silver threaded jong sarat material and shopping for beautiful, beaded earrings. I also enjoyed watching the five-minute documentary in English, which explains why the gallery was built and its contents.
