Cambodia sets target for Japanese

PHNOM PENH Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism forecasts around 300,000 Japanese tourists a year will visit the country by 2020.

Tourism Minister, Thong Khon, told local media that to achieve the goal the government needs to improve services and facilities to cater to the market.

More tourism products need to be developed, e-visa and visa-on-arrival should be in place and more Japanese speaking tour guides are urgently required.

inside no 2He added that it might be possible to further facilitate Japanese tourists by allowing them to pay in Japanese yen during their stay in Cambodia. A similar facility has been suggested for China’s yuan currency.

All Nippon Airways will launch daily flights between Tokyo (Narita) and Phnom Penh effective 1 September.

“It is very important for us to establish direct flights between the two countries because this will help us make progress towards our goal,” the minister said.

Phnom Penh Post quoted Japanese Association of Travel Agents representative, Akihiko Hosaka, saying Cambodia should also focus on improving the quality of travel packages for individuals and families, which represent an important target group.

Close to two-thirds of Japanese travellers go to Cambodia for leisure, he said, with 66.4% of trips organised around honeymoon tours, sightseeing, study travel,  or visiting friends and relatives. Another 16.3% travel are business travellers.

During the first half of the year, 90,877 Japanese tourists visited the country, a slight increase of 0.3% from 90,627 visits during the same period last year.

Last year, Cambodia welcomed 193,330 Japanese travellers down 10.4% from 215,788 visits in 2014, according to the tourism ministry data.
