PHNOM PENH Cambodia opened the Cambodia Civil Aviation Training Centre (CATC), last week, its first ever training centre focused on aviation skills apart from pilot training.

Phnom Penh Post reported the training centre, located at the Phnom Penh International Airport, cost USD10.1 million, funded and supervised by South Korea’s International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

KOICA’s Cambodia office handed over the aviation training centre to the Cambodia government on mid last week.

inside no 2Construction on the CATC started in February last year, out-sourced to the Vietnam-based construction company, Seogwoo Construction.

The State Secretariat of Civil Aviation spokesman, Sinn Chanserey Vutha, was quoted saying that the initial goal of the centre would be to enhance skills of 10,000 Cambodians already working in aviation.

In the long-run the centre would provide opportunities for high-school graduates to further their education in the industry before applying for jobs, he said.

The training centre is not designed for pilot training, the spokesman explained. Courses were designed for airport security, air navigation services, air traffic controllers and airport management.

Passenger arrivals across Cambodia’s three international airports — Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville — continue to increase annually creating a shortage of skill labour, he added.

According to Cambodia Airports’ data, the country’s three airports received 5,015,257 passengers and 53,080 flight movements, January to September this year, increasing 6.17% and 2.76% from 4,723,748 passenger movements and 51,655 aircraft movements respectively over the same period last year.

Of that, Siem Reap airport handled 2,474,713 passengers increasing 3.03% from 2,401,859 passengers and 27,060 flight movements slightly decreasing 0.36% from 27,158 flight movements.

Phnom Penh airport welcomed 2,449,353 passengers improving 8.83% from 2,250,600 passengers and 24,488 flight movements up 5.98% from 23,107.
