Airports of Thailand reports August data showed increases in both aircraft movements and passenger traffic at six airports under its management.

For the first eight months of the year the six airports handled 58.5 million passengers. Three airports set the pace; Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport 34.3 million passengers, Don Mueang 10.7 million and Phuket 7.5 million. Chiang Mai handled 3.4 million passengers.

AoT released details, late last week, revealing improvements in aircraft movements of 18.58% in August. Flights increased from 41,603 to 49,332. The entire system handled 7,676,777 passengers increasing 18.07% from 6,501,871 during the same month last year.

Suvarnabhumi Airport registered a slight increase in international aircraft movements of 4.35% from 19,492 to 20,340, while domestic movements dropped 26.70% from 7,177 to 5,261 movements.

International passenger traffic only grew 4.90% from 3,516,155 to 3,688,291 due to the switch in services to Don Mueang. Domestic passengers, however, declined 26.63% from 1,093,966 to 802,690.

Understandably, Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport registers massive increases in both aircraft movements and passenger traffic as long as comparisons are made with months when the airport was virtually closed.

International aircraft movements increased 814.04% from 413 to 3,755, while domestic movements recorded a growth of 64.95% from 4,958 to 8,178. The comparisons are being made against months when the airport was used by just private flights.

International passengers at Don Mueang also posted a growth of 1,672.65% from 27,685 to 490,757 and domestic passengers increased 132.22% from 404,530 to 939,386.

The northern gateway, Chiang Mai International Airport, continued to show growth in August. Both international and domestic aircraft movements registered double-digit increases of 90.82% (425 to 811) and 15.78% (2,332 to 2,700).

International passenger traffic grew 69.86% (45,307 to 76,959), while domestic traffic gained 17.29% (319,120 to 374,283).

The southern gateway, Phuket International Airport also registered growth in all sectors. International aircraft movements gained 30.49% from 2,686 to 3,505. Domestic movements grew 16.74% from 2,408 to 2,811.

Both international and domestic passenger traffic grew 20.32% (836,476 to 1,006,462).

Chiang Rai International Airport reported a slight increase in aircraft movements of 0.76% (526 to 530), while passenger traffic grew 3.49% (78,506 to 81,243).

Hat Yai International Airport reported a decline of 13.64% in international aircraft movements (154 to 133), while domestic movements grew 24.81% (1,032 to 1,288) in August. Meanwhile, overall passenger traffic registered a 20.31% from 180,126 to 216,706 passengers.
