BANGKOK- AirAsia announced yesterday the launch of direct flights from Thailand’s northern city of Chiang Mai to Hong Kong, starting from 7 January 2014. Flights will be served by an Airbus A321 with 189 seats.

Tassapon Bijleveld, CEO of Thai AirAsia said, “AirAsia is extremely excited to introduce its new route from Chiang Mai to Hong Kong, ‘the Pearl of the East’. Hong Kong has always been a popular all-year destination for Thai people with its cosmopolitan vibe, dynamic attractions, famous temples, shopping malls, and excellent transportation infrastructure. With no visa requirement for Thai citizens, Hong Kong is an accessible and favourite destination for many. Today we are very pleased to be able to offer low fares, brand-new planes, and more convenience with direct flights for residents of Chiang Mai. AirAsia’s direct flights to Hong Kong from other cities in Thailand include Bangkok and Phuket”, added the CEO.

“Meanwhile, Chiang Mai’s northern city of Thailand is also an attractive destination for Hong Kong residents as it is a city full of natural attractions, delicious Thai cuisine and beautiful temples. In only two and a half hours, travellers can escape Hong Kong to a relaxing weekend getaway. The destination is perfect for individual travellers, couples, and families with children” said the CEO.

To celebrate the launch of the Hong Kong-Chiang Mai route, AirAsia is offering a special promotional fare for bookings done exclusively on the airline’s website until 17 November 2013 and for travel during 7 January 2014-5 August 2014.

Thai AirAsia will however need to compete with two other Hong Kong-based carriers. Cathay Pacific subsidiary Dragonair proposes a daily flight from Chiang Mai while Hong Kong Express is also proposing a daily service between both cities. Thai AirAsia will have to show that it can be cheaper than Hong Kong Express which offers already a return trip from US$ 159… The competition will certainly help to keep prices affordable.
