A Qantas Domestic flight from Sydney to Perth was compelled to make an emergency stop in Adelaide last Friday, following a fire in the cargo hold.

A smoke alarm on the Airbus A330 flight alerted crew to the problem, and the flight safely landed at Adelaide Airport, The Guardian Australia reported.

Emergency crews fixed the problem and all passengers disembarked safely.

A Qantas spokesperson said that an internal investigation will be created by Qantas engineers to determine the source of fire hazard.

“The flight deck received a warning light indicating a technical issue, so as a safety precaution the pilots made the decision to divert to Adelaide,” the spokesperson said.

“The aircraft landed without incident and passengers disembarked via normal procedure through the aerobridge,

“The aircraft has been assessed by engineers and no fault was found,

“Passengers are being re-accommodated on other Qantas services from Adelaide to Perth.”

The NSW A-League Team the Central Coast Mariners were on-board, on the way to a game with Perth Glory.

The grounding of the flight in Adelaide comes as unions have put Qantas on notice for planning to offshore safety and maintenance jobs.
