Thai airports suffer declines

BANGKOK  Airports of Thailand reports September data showed overall passengers passing through Suvarnabhumi airport declined 15.58% due to prolonged polical instability in Bangkok.
The country’s main gateway welcomed 3,387,999 passengers in September, compared to 4,013,312 during the same month last year.
AoT released details, Wednesday, revealing an improvement in aircraft movements of 2.57% in September. Flights increased from 46,475 to 47,670. The entire system handled 6,705,882 passengers decreasing 1.83% from 6,831,067 during the same month last year.
Inside6For the first nine months, the six airports handled 64.62 million passengers. Three airports dominate: Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport 33.52 million passengers; Don Mueang 14.87 million; and Phuket 8.33 million. Chiang Mai Airport handled 4.63 million passengers.
How the airports peformed
Suvarnabhumi Airport registered a decline of 12.10% in international aircraft movements from 19,182 to 16,861, while domestic movements increased 10.83% from 4,744 to 5,258 movements.
International passenger traffic dropped 13.46% from 3,285,645 to 2,843,265, while domestic passengers decreased 25.14% from 727,667 to 544,734. Overall, it accounted for a 15.58% decline in passengers.
The second aviation gateway, Don Mueang Airport recorded a 5.67% increase of international aircraft movements from 3,547 to 3,748. Domestic movements posted 18.81% improvement from 8,048 to 9,562.
International passenger traffic increased 13.62% from 446,671 to 507,523, while domestic passengers increased 47.35% from 831,687 to 1,225,514.
Chiang Mai International Airport continued to show growth in September. Both international and domestic aircraft movements registered double-digit increases of 41.99% (624 to 886) and 16.69% (2,553 to 2,979).
International passenger trafic grew 50.52% from 62,001 to 93,323, while domestic traffic gained 9.87% from 347,202 to 381,486.
Phuket International Airport registered a decline of 7.37% in international aircraft movements from 3,173 to 2,939, while domestic aircraft movements increased 7.78% from 2,659 to 2,866.
International passenger traffic decreased 7.34% from 449,501 to 416,502, while domestic declined 10.66% from 383,500 to 342,627.
Chiang Rai International Airport reported an increase in aircraft movements of 53.35% from 508 to 779 while passenger trafic grew 15.53% from 78,395 to 90,566.
Hat Yai International Airport reported a decline of 2.04% in international aircraft movements (147 to 144), while domestic movements grew 27.75% (1,290 to 1,648) in September. Meanwhile, overall passenger traffic registered an 18.99% growth from 218,798 to 260,342 passengers.
