American Airlines has unveiled a major programme of fleet and product upgrades for 2015, as it aims to offer passengers a “world-class travel experience”.
Timed to coincide with the anniversary of its merger with US Airways, the airline has announced plans to invest US$2 billion in a series of enhancements to its fleet, seats, technology and airport services, under its “Going for Great” programme.
“Now that we have the network to compete globally, we’re going to deliver a product that’s better than our competitors,” said Doug Parker, American Airlines’ chairman & CEO.
“Refreshed cabins and clubs, modernised ticket counters, improved technology and new aircraft are further examples of how American is ‘going for great’ – providing our outstanding team members the tools they need to deliver a great experience for our customers.”

In terms of fleet, American Airlines will take delivery of 112 aircraft next year and 84 in 2016, including single-aisle Airbus A321s and Boeing 737s, plus twin-aisle A350s, B777-300ERs and B787s. These add to the 100 new aircraft American has welcomed in 2014.
The airline will also undertake a “nose-to-tail” overhaul of more than 90 A319s and all B777-200s, as well as adding new business class flat-beds and revamped economy class seats on its B757s and B767s.
In terms of in-flight technology, American will offer in-seat power sockets onboard its new aircraft, including all B777-300ERs and B787s, while in-flight Wi-Fi is being expanded from domestic aircraft to long-haul jets, including all B777s, B787s and A330s.
At airports, American’s Admirals Club lounges will feature new F&B options and shower facilities, plus improved technology, while new work tables and power outlets will be rolled out at airport gates.
American closed its merger with US Airways on 9 December 2013 to form the largest airline in the world.
