JAKARTA A crackdown on irregularities in flight permits by Indonesia’s Ministry of Transportation forced Garuda Indonesia to consolidate flight numbers to destinations in the Middle East.
The flight Makassar – Medan – Jeddah, which should have operated with just one flight number, was using two.
The ministry claimed the airline had violated its licensing permit.
In an announcement on its website, Garuda Indonesia said it has now consolidated the service under one flight number.

Based on finding that the airline had violated the Ministry of Transportation ruling, Garuda Indonesia 9 corrected its error., 9 January.
The ministry cracked down on a number of airlines for technical breaches involving flight number and permits to fly on specific days. The Ministry accused AirAsia of operating its Sunday flight between Surabaya and Singapore illegally after the aircraft crashed into the sea about 40 minutes into the flight, killing all 162 persons on board.
The ministry has been blamed for being lax in its supervision of the airline industry and its latest crackdown of licence violations would suggest a history of poor management of flight approvals. Indonesia has a very poor safety record and part of the blame has been placed at the ministry door.
The ministry also announced, last week, that it was raising the minimum selling price on low-cost fares to 40% of an airline’s highest online fare. Previously the MSP was just 30% of an airline’s highest fare.
