The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has announced that electronic data interchange will be enabled in Cambodia’s main ports by April 2021.

Speaking a meeting Monday with Transport Minister Sun Chanthol, Masahiko Furuichi, team leader at JICA and a senior advisor for the transport sector, said they have achieved great progress with the ‘Basic Design Survey on Grant Agreement for Port EDI’ project.

“The Port EDI project, which will come at a cost of about $14 million, will be operational by April 2021,” he said.

The term EDI in the shipping sector refers to the use of systems and software that improve scheduling, speed up procedures and reduce paperwork, particularly in customs clearance.

Minister Sun Chanthol thanked JICA for their cooperation and support implementing the EDI initiative, and encouraged the mission to continue to work with authorities at the autonomous ports in Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, as well as the General Department of Waterways, Maritime Transport and Ports, and the Kampuchea Shipping Agency and Brokers.
