With an investment of nearly $10 million, construction of what will become Sihanoukville’s first mall began on Thursday.
Furi Times Square Mall, a shopping centre that will be built on a hectare of land and include an Amazon and an Starbucks cafe as well as a movie theater, is due for completion in September next year.
Chin Chanlen, director of Furi Times Square, said the decision to invest in a shopping mall in the coastal city follows increasing demand from the rising number of tourists to the region, especially of Chinese origin. She said the project has investors from Macau and other parts of China.
“Sihanoukville didn’t have a shopping mall yet, so we thought this was a wise investment and decided to put $10 million into the project. We believe it will be a success because of the increase in tourists and foreign investors.”
“The shopping mall has been designed to be modern and environmentally friendly,” Ms Chanlen said.
