Chinese company Shanghai Hongyuan Investment Co Ltd plans to transform Kampot into a special economic zone to boost the local economy, hoping that it will undergo a transformation similar to that of China’s Shenzhen Province or Singapore, local media reported.

However, the company’s founder Hong Huang was quoted as saying that there are no concrete plans. He said the main idea is to invest in Kampot’s transport sector including the harbour, and build a high speed train from the province to Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville.

In an article by online news portal Sabay News, Mr Hong was quoted as saying that he met with Kampot provincial governor Cheav Tay on the matter while appealing to Kampot authorities to support its local investment projects.

Sabay News wrote that Mr Tay said the Chinese company was keen on making Kampot as prosperous as the Chinese province of Shenzhen.
