Street food to feature in clean city competition

The Clean City Contest, a competition held every year to evaluate cities according to cleanliness, may soon expand to include categories for best street food and best street food vendors.

The Ministry of Tourism and the National Committee for Clean City Assessment plan to request the government to include food street and food street vendor categories in upcoming editions of the Clean City Contest.

The move aims to promote hygiene in the preparation of street food in Cambodia which officials say will help attract more international tourists.

During a meeting on Monday to prepare the 7th National Clean City Day, Tourism Minister Thong Khon said improving street food quality and hygiene standards is an important part of luring more visitors to the Kingdom.

“In addition, having better standards for street food will improve the living conditions and the health of our people and help small family-owned businesses grow.

“If Cambodia becomes widely known for having good and safe street food, more tourists will choose to visit us,” the minister added.

Thourn Sinan, chairman of the Cambodian Chapter of the Pacific Asia Travel Association, said the announcement was a positive development for the tourism sector of every Cambodian province.

“Frankly, this is a fantastic plan,” he said. “The private sector has requested the inclusion of street food in the contest for a long time.
