In a bid to reduce the city’s traffic woes, a group of Chinese experts has begun feasibility studies on a monorail project and a metro system in Phnom Penh.

Speaking during a meeting on road safety at the Ministry of Interior on Tuesday, Sun Chanthol, the Minister of Public Works and Transportation, said work on the feasibility studies has begun in an attempt to improve public transportation in the city.

A feasibility study for an automated gateway transit (AGT) system, an electric-powered mass transit system, in Phnom Penh is also being conducted in cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

“The objective is to see which system is more cost efficient: the AGT, the monorail or the metro,” Mr Chanthol said at the meeting on Tuesday.

According to the minister, the monorail would be less noisy and cheaper than the AGT.

The feasibility study for the monorail project was announced last month during Mr Chanthol’s official visit to China.
