787 debris sparks airport fire

Officials are inspecting a Boeing 787 after debris that fell from the plane started a fire and shut down operations at a South Carolina, US airport over the weekend.

According to reports, the debris fell from the plane and onto the runway at Charleston International Airport on Saturday made its way onto the airport’s grass, sparing a blaze that ceased airport operations for up to an hour, The Washington Post reported.

A spokesperson from the aircraft’s manufacturing company, Boeing, said the aircraft was in the midst of a preflight runway test when the fire broke-out.

The spokesperson said the 787 was among the latest to be built.

With no injuries resulting from the event, the spokesperson added that production of the aircraft would not be affected.

Earlier this month, All Nippon Airways had announced it had grounded temporarily grounded several of its Boeing 787 Dreamliners after a problem was discovered on the aircraft’s Rolls-Royce engines.
