Airline menus - the healthiest and the fattiest

Maintaining your diet and health shouldn’t be too hard while travelling, that’s if you choose the right airline, according to a new study.

The 2012 Airlines Food Survey rating by DietDetective.com found that of the 12 airline menus studied, Virgin America is “off the charts” when it comes to nutritional foods, offering meals and snacks that “fill you up and help you avoid the junk”.

The airline’s nut snacks, PopChips and Protein Meal Box pushed the carrier to the top of the food chain, winning the top spot with the “healthiest” food choices in the sky.

Air Canada was also top picks when looking for healthy options at 35,000 feet in the air, with the airline delivering “high-quality health-conscious cuisine” including the Nissin Chicken Ramen Noodle Soup, Celery & Carrots with Ranch Dip as well as a Roasted Chicken Wrap with Salsa with only 350 calories.

Meanwhile Allegiant Air scored the lowest in terms of healthy options, with nuts being the carrier’s healthiest choice, followed by the Jack Links Beef Jerky.

Frontier Airline was also among the least healthy airline choices, offering “unfulfilling” chips, salsa and oatmeals as well as a Mediterranean Snack Box with hummus, bruschetta, dried fruit, olives and cookies.

The airline’s Roasted Turkey Sandwich was not bad either, however, the study recommended passing on the mayonnaise with more than 100 calories per serving.

Other carriers receiving positive ratings for their healthy choices include, Alaska Airlines, United Airlines (previously number one), Jet Blue Airways and American Airlines.
