Sprint through sea to finish line

The world’s only mini-marathon that covers a run through the sea to an offshore island will be held 29 June, in Chumphon province.
Chumphon province is located 468 km south of Bangkok on the Gulf of Thailand.
Tagged the “Annual Run through the Sea to Pithak Island, the 10th Lang Suan Mini Marathon covers 14 km, but ends with a 1 km sprint through the sea, just 30 centimetres deep, between the mainland and nearby Pithak Island.
The event is organised by local organisations and sports clubs with the support of the Tourism Authority of Thailand Chumphon Office.
It is intended to promote health and tourism in Chumphon, one of Thailand’s emerging destinations that shares a border with Myanmar to the west and extends east to the Gulf of Thailand coast.
From the starting point near the Chakri Naruebet Ship monument in Paknam Lang Suan, runners follow a beautiful coastal road before reaching the last km stretch to Pithak Island. The run is timed so participants will cross to the island at low tide.
Another shorter race, called “Run Fun Run”, covers only 3.5 km from the starting point at the Moo 12 village centre in Lang Suan district and ends at Pithak Island.
Tourism Authority of Thailand governor, Thawatchai Arunyik said: “We invite runners from all over the world to take part in this unusual mini-marathon.”
