Cameras on every street corner

HO CHI MINH CITY: To improve security in downtown business and tourist districts, the city plans to install surveillance cameras on streets starting with district 1 in April 2015.
District 1 People’s Committee deputy chairman, Le Truong Hai Hieu, said cameras will help police tackle street robberies and control traffic better.
“The project includes installing cameras in alleys that are prone to crime. Cameras have been installed in some alleyways in Pham Ngu Lao and Tan Dinh wards and were welcomed by local residents,” he said.
Surveillance cameras will be installed on every street in downtown Ho Chi Minh City to feed images back to a district police control centre. These smart cameras will also adjust traffic lights based on traffic flows.
The street cameras will help to detect speeding, or illegally parked vehicles.
District 1 authorities will also launch a smart phone application that will allow residents to upload images that alert the city about sanitation and security problems.
The project will cost US$12.7 million and come from central government funds, awarded to the city for collecting tax and other revenues beyond the planned 2013 target.
During January to June this year, Ho Chi Minh City recorded nearly 2.1 million foreign tourist arrivals, up 10% year on year.
