BANGKOK Many regions of Thailand will face heavy rains until Thursday as a consequence of Typhoon Kalmaegi, that is approaching Vietnam, Thailand’s National News Bureau reports.
According to the latest report from the Thailand Meteorological Department, released Tuesday, Typhoon Kalmaegi was located 600 km east of Hanoi, Vietnam in the South China Sea.
After causing devastation in the Philippines, the system was moving towards the west-northwest at a speed of 30 kmph. It is forecast to sweep across the Chinese island of Hainan before making landfall in northern Vietnam Wednesday.
At the same time, the strong southwest monsoon will continue to build up over coastal Thailand along the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.
This will bring more rainfall, nationwide, up until 18 September, with scattered showers over 60% to 80% of the country. Heavy downpours are likely in the North, Northeast and East of the country as well as on the west coast of South Thailand.
There is an cautionary alert on boats; small ones are advised to remain close to shore.
By 19 September, the southwest monsoon will decrease bringing drier conditions, with rain possible in 40% to 60% of Thailand.
