Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre joins Canon's Cartridge Recycling Programme

KUALA LUMPUR - In line with efforts to reduce the organisation’s impact on Mother Nature, the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (the Centre) has signed up for Canon Marketing (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd’s (Canon) Cartridge Recycling Programme with the setting up of a collection point within the facility for team members to safely dispose of their used Canon ink and toner cartridges for recycling.

Under Canon’s Cartridge Recycling Programme (launched in 2011), once the drop-off box is full, the used ink and toner cartridges will be returned to Canon which in turn will engage a licensed recycling company to sort and segregate the dismantled materials into plastic, iron, toner powder, ink, etc. so it can be safely recycled or disposed of to avoid causing additional pollution to the environment.

Applauding the Canon initiative, Alan Pryor, the Centre’s General Manager, said that, as Malaysia’s premier convention facility, the Centre has been committed to sustainable and environmentally-friendly practices since day one so “we are only too happy to partner with Canon on this programme.”

According to Pryor, raising awareness of the importance of sustainability and conservation is something close to the Centre’s heart and prior to joining the Canon Cartridge Recycling Programme, team members were already collecting used cartridges for proper disposal. “And their efforts are bearing fruit. Last year (2013), 40 boxes of used Canon cartridges were accumulated. This year, from January to September alone, 45 boxes have been already been collected. We are confident that with this new collection point, the numbers can only increase.”

Speaking on behalf of Canon, Cheryl Lim, Executive Assistant to CEO and Senior Manager, Corporate Planning Division, said that only good can come out of this partnership. “We hope more companies like the Centre will do their bit by collecting and properly disposing of cartridges rather than discriminately discarding them to eventually end up in landfills.”

The Centre’s other on-going green initiatives include a 3R campaign (reduce, re-use and recycle) which encourages staff and visitors to reduce wastage, re-use and recycle wherever possible, sponsorship of 240 trees to date under the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia’s (FRIM) Conservation Culture Programme with monies allocated for door and speaker gifts from her annual Association Seminar since 2010, use of biodegradable cleaning products, minimal usage of pesticides, sourcing products from environmentally-conscious suppliers and locally-produced products for the culinary department, fine-tuning existing systems like lighting control and on-demand escalators i.e., motionless unless being used by a guest, to improve on energy savings, and encouraging delegate participation in the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau’s (MyCEB) ‘Let’s Meet & Green’ tree-planting programme.
