The world’s greatest footballer player of all time, Pelé (Edson Arantes do Nascimento), is set to grace Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre’s (MCEC) Plenary stage on Wednesday 19 November 2014.

Pelé returns to the country for the first time in 10 years and will be a special guest at a tribute and testimonial luncheon for legendary SBS broadcaster Les Murray, to celebrate his retirement after 35 years covering, broadcasting and championing football in Australia.

Following the luncheon, an evening Plenary show ‘Pelé. My Life. My Story’ will take the audience on Pelé’s personal journey where the three-time World Cup champion will share his compelling story about his incredible football career and life.

MCEC’s Plenary has fast become an iconic Melbourne and Australian venue for many internationally renowned celebrities, touring concerts, sporting professionals and leading academics.

Markson Sparks! and Pelé Live Director, Max Markson said: “We were really impressed with the flexibility and world-leading capabilities MCEC’s Plenary offers."

“For us it was important that we gave thousands of Pelé’s Australian fans the opportunity to see him first hand, while creating an intimate Q&A experience for the audience."

“The convenience of being able to hold both the luncheon and theatre show in the same venue was also a key factor in our decision to bring Pelé to MCEC,” Markson added.

MCEC Chief Executive Officer, Peter King said: “We’re looking forward to welcoming one of the biggest names in sporting history to our Plenary stage for his first Australian appearance in quite some time."

“Hosting the likes of Pelé highlights the adaptability and diversity of our Plenary, from international football stars one day to world-renowned academics the next."

“MCEC is a valuable community asset and events in our Plenary bring the Melbourne public together to learn, share, be educated and entertained.”

The 5500 seat Plenary can be transformed into three self-contained spaces, seating 2500 or 1500. This functionality allows Plenary to accommodate a wide range of events, from single speaker presentations to large international concerts, while still creating an intimate theatre experience.

MCEC’s Plenary has hosted the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger and His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and in the coming months will welcome magician James Randi, musician Nick Cave and St Petersburg Ballet’s Swan Lake.
