BANGKOK Thais will celebrate a public holiday, this Friday, 5 December, to honour His Majesty the King, Bhumibol Adulyadej, on his 87th birthday.
Thai people will wear yellow, a symbol of respect as yellow is the colour for Monday, the day the King was born.
All public offices and homes will fly the national flag to signify respect for the monarchy.
Their Majesties the King and Queen, HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, and HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, will grant a much-awaited public audience at the Amarin Winitchai Throne Hall at 1030 this Friday.
inside no 6Also, present will be HRH Princess Chulabhorn Valayalaksana, HRH Princess Srirasmi and other members of the Royal Family, according to the Bureau of the Royal Household.
The Crown Prince, accompanied by his daughter HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, will also perform a religious ceremony to mark His Majesty’s birthday at the Emerald Buddha Temple at 1700.
The 5 December holiday is also designated Father’s Day.
Father’s Day gained nationwide popularity in the 1980s as part of a campaign initiated by Prime Minister Prem Tinsulanonda to promote family values.
King Bhumibol Adulyadej was born, Monday 5 December 1927, in the United States and is the world’s longest reigning monarch. This year is his 87th birthday and 68th anniversary of his accession to the throne.
