A major new attraction is being developed in Shanghai, designed to “showcase animals from the North and South Pole”.

Haichang Holdings announced on Monday that it has secured land use rights for the new Shanghai Haichang Polar Ocean World project, which will be developed on a 297,155m² site next to Dishui Lake.

The project will consist of a marine theme park with 13 exhibition halls, four “large animal interaction plazas”, four cinemas, 18 rides, and space for animal-themed exhibitions and parades. It will also feature a themed hotel.

“Today marks a historic moment for Haichang Holdings. The obtainment of the ownership of Shanghai Haichang Polar Ocean World’s land use rights marks Haichang Holdings’ entrance into the Shanghai market for the first time,” said Qu Naijie, chairman of Haichang Holdings.

“We will leverage our theme park operational experience and innovative technological know-how by introducing the highest standards of international design, planning and leading management practices. Together with the Shanghai government, we will fulfil the pledge of developing a world-class park for Shanghai citizens and tourists from all over the country.”

Billed as a “marine-themed culture park”, the attraction will combine elements of entertainment, ecology and scientific research, according to Haichang. The project will be designed by companies that also worked on Disney and SeaWorld projects.

“As a world-class flagship marine theme park, the Shanghai Haichang Polar Ocean World will showcase a wide range of polar marine species. It will also host significant entertainment features such as large marine science-based entertainment facilities, and an omnimax movie theatre. We are determined to ensure the Shanghai project will be on par with the industry’s global first-tier standards in the areas of animal science exhibition, education, theme entertainment and high technology,” stated Wang Xuguang, CEO of Haichang Holdings.

Scheduled to open in 2017, the Shanghai Haichang Polar Ocean World will become Haichang’s seventh polar-themed attraction in China, joining existing facilities in cities including Tianjin, Wuhan and Chengdu.
