Delta upgrades in-flight Wi-Fi

Delta Air Lines has announced plans to upgrade its in-flight Wi-Fi service, with faster connection speeds and expanded coverage.

The upgrades will extend Wi-Fi access beyond North America to include routes between the US and Latin America or the Caribbean. Wi-Fi provider Gogo will begin switching Delta’s longer-range domestic aircraft from air-to-ground technology to new satellite-based technology from 2016.

The service will be available on Delta’s fleet of Boeing 757s, B737-800s, B737-900s and Airbus A319s, while Delta’s short-haul fleet of B717, MD-88 and MD-90 aircraft will start offering broadband connection speeds. The enhanced Wi-Fi service will also be offered on Delta’s new A321 aircraft when they enter service from the start of 2016.

“Global connectivity equals global productivity and business travellers want greater bandwidth, faster speeds and broader network coverage. That’s exactly what they will get when they fly Delta,” said Tim Mapes, the airline’s senior vice president of marketing.

By mid-2016, Delta’s entire international fleet, including all of its B777, B767, B747, A330 aircraft operating on long-haul routes will offer Wi-Fi. This will be expanded to Delta’s new A330neo and A350 aircraft when they enter the airline’s fleet.
