YANGON  Myanmar’s Ministry of Transport says it has upgraded six airports in terms of safety and security.
The six airports that have gained new safety equipment are Yangon, Mandalay, Nyaung U, Heho, Thandwe and Dawei.
The Global New Light of Myanmar claimed the six airports received safety and security upgrades with the installation of new equipment purchased under a bilateral aid programme with Japan International Cooperation Agency.
Under the Japan aid project, JICA donated equipment and vehicles worth 1,233 million Japanese Yen to the ministry.

The airports serve around 3 million passengers a year. Overall the country has 70 airports that serve around 4.4 million passengers a year. The ministry hopes to contract the management of many of its domestic airports to private companies.
