Danang expands airport

DANANG  Construction on a new international terminal at Danang International Airport is scheduled to begin early next year and be ready by June 2017.
Local media quoted comments from the Transport Minister, Dinh La Thang, at a meeting between the Ministry and Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) last week.
It will help to ease pressure on the current terminal for both domestic and international flights at an airport that serves the country’s central coastal towns and expanding with more international flights to support tourism development.
ACV general director, Le Manh Hung, said the current terminal at Danang International Airport could handle a maximum of 6 million passengers a year.
inside no 1However, the airport could reach that figure this year as the number of passengers increases at an average of 14.5% a year.
The director cited ACV plans to raise the handling capacity of the present terminal at Danang airport to 8 million passengers a year, but this will only meet demand in the next three years and then the airport will again be congested.
To accommodate long-term projections, a new terminal is a must for Danang airport. It will need to have two terminals; one to handle both domestic and the other international services.
To fund the expansion, the Transport Minister Dinh La Thang allowed ACV to establish a joint stock company with ACV holding a 10% stake and the consortium of Thang Long Aviation Services Corporation (TASECO), AOV Investment Corporation and Hanoi Construction Corporation (HANCORP) the remaining stake.
According to the construction plan, the new terminal will open in June 2017.
The existing terminal at Danang opened in 2011. The airport served 5 million passengers last year, up 16% when compared to 2013. Foreign passengers increased 53% to 900,000.
At present, three domestic and eight international airlines operate around 100 flights daily.
