Rain clouds a welcome sign in North Thailand

CHIANG MAI  Dry spells continue in July, but heavy rains are forecast for late July to mid-October according to the latest forecast from the Northern Meteorological Centre.
Thailand’s National News Bureau, quoting the meteorological centre’s latest weather forecast, said the rainy season would set in by late July with high winds and a potential for flooding later in the year.
From late this month to September, as the monsoon travels through the northern part of Thailand, heavy rains may even lead to flash floods and landslides in some areas.
High-pressure winds from China will expand periodically to eventually cover the upper part of the north and the North Thailand.
Camera 360It is expected that the rainy season will end by mid October in the northern region of Thailand, while the south will continue to experience rainfalls until late January, and especially during November to December.
The NBT report warned said travellers should closely monitor weather conditions and check forecasts, especially from August to September when the country is flood prone. Tropical cyclones could form and move near or through Thailand, with accompanying strong winds, downpours and heavy rains in some areas.
The central region is currently suffering drought with some news services warning that Bangkok could run short of drinking water in a month.
However, the drought will give way soon to monsoon rains and it is very likely that drought warnings will be replaced by threats of floods by September.
