HCMC bans pets on walking street

HO CHI MINH CITY Ho Chi Minh City government has issued a list of do’s and don’ts for pedestrians on Nguyen Hue, the city’s newly opened walking street, including a ban on pets. Thanh Nien News reported that selling coffee, inline skating and sitting on picnic blankets on the street are also strictly prohibited. The USD19.7 million Nguyen Hue pedestrian street is the latest tourist attraction in HCMC downtown following its opening to the public, 29 April, this year. It is a feature of the city’s celebrations for the 40th anniversary marking the end of the Vietnam War. inside no 2On 17 May, the city inaugurated a new statue of President Ho Chi Minh on the street to celebrate his 125th birthday. It is also installing 160 wooden benches along the street. The benches are made from the timber from the majestic, century-old trees that stood in front of the Saigon Opera House. They were cut down last July to make room for the city’s first subway station. Ho Chi Minh City welcomed more than 2.1 million international arrivals in the first six months of this year, a 3% year-on-year increase.
