VIENTIANE Vientiane, often tagged Asia’s safest capital, is now installing additional CCTV cameras and security alarms at over 790 locations to improve safety for visitors and manage traffic.
Lao News Agency reported the USD28 million contract was signed by the Ministry of Public Security and Golden Dragon Company.
The move is intended to make the capital more secure and improve surveillance for law agencies. There are already CCTV cameras at popular spots in the city, but the additional ones will extend cover to most parts of the inner city districts.
The project includes installing CCTV cameras, security alarms and upgrading the network from analogue to digital to link the entire camera network to the CCTV Control Centre of the Metropolitan Police Headquarters.
According to a survey by Lao PDR’s Tourism Development Department, Vientiane is the second most popular destination in the country after Luang Prabang.
