BANGKOK, 22 September 2017: Bangkok-based, Travel Impact Newswire, marked the United Nations International Day of Peace, 21 September, by launching an essay competition that focuses on how tourism can contribute to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

The Olive Tree Awards essay competition claims to be the first of its kind in the global tourism industry.

Young people, under the age of 30,  are invited to submit essays of up to 1,200 words on how travel and tourism can advance the cause of the UN SDGs and meet the targets by 2030.

The competition will be held every six months. Each round will see winners being awarded a first prize of USD1,000 and two runners up of USD500 each.

The total annual prize money of USD4,000 has been provided by Sonu Shivdasani, co-founder and CEO of Evason Resorts, and the Dubai-based M.F.Husain Foundation, set up by the family of the late M.F.Husain, one of India’s most recognised painters.

The winners of each round will be announced 20 March (International Day of Happiness) and 21 Sept (International Day of Peace).

Writers must be under 30 years at the date of submission (ID proof of age will be required).

It is not restricted to people working in the travel industry. Anyone can submit an essay, but there must be a tourism angle.

Essays must be written in English, up to a maximum of 1,200 words. Seven judges have been appointed and given a brief to consider content quality over grammatically correct English.
