Party for midsummer success

13 Jul 2013  2043 | World Travel News

Midsummer madness maybe, but two of Thailand’s top flight travel industry clubs are joining hands to entertain members and friends at a Midsummer Fest 18 July.
If there has to be a reason for the travel industry to party then the executive committees of both PATA Thailand and Skål Bangkok agreed that members have enjoyed such remarkably successful first six months they should celebrate half-time in style.
Amazing Thailand, we might say. In 2010 red shirt protesters brought tourism to its knees and three years later it is flying high and the sky’s the limit.
To join this evening of midsummer entertainment, the committees are asking travel executives to shell out Bt1,400 ( members of either the Chapter or Skål) and Bt1,650 for those still outside the folds of these two august clubs.
European midsummer-related holidays are a tradition particularly in northern Europe – Sweden, Denmark, Norway Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania – but are also celebrated in Germany, Ireland, parts of Britain and as probably as far as you can fly excepting Australia and New Zealand where it is the dead of winter.
What would a party be without a contest? So this one has a tag line contest on the cartoon seen here. Give it your best go and you get a refund on the night’s registration fee. We can give you a hint club veterans and chairmen, Andrew Wood of Skal and Bert van Walbeek of PATA are both depicted in the mad hatter’s party.
The organisers are expecting a turnout of at least 60 happy go-lucky travel executives who can vouch that first-half 2013 was their best  ever. They will be drinking to it and also to an even better second half and 2014.
Midsummer fest is at the Chatrium Hotel Riverside Bangkok Thursday, 18 July from 1800 onwards.
You are not going to believe this but the organisers claim there will be a Maypole and a  bonfire. Definitely midsummer madness. To confirm how daft everyone will be the chef has promised to lead the pole dance.
Buffet with Scandinavian specialties and free flow of beverages for Bt 1,400 for Chapter and Skål members and Bt 1,650 for non-members
