Air NZ invest millions in 777-200ER upgrades

Following on Jetstar’s announcement to increase its presence in New Zealand, the countries national carrier said it will invest up to $100 million in upgrading its Boeing 777-200ER fleet.

Expected to commence on eight aircraft during the second quarter of 2014 and completed within the following 12 months, Air New Zealand explained the move would ensure the aircraft delivers the “most innovative product and technologies” to customers flying on the airline’s international network.

Changes to aircraft will include new in-flight entertainment system with improved resolution and capacitive touch monitors and new elements of the Air New Zealand brand will be installed in the aircraft’s interior.

Business premier seating will also be upgraded to match the 777-300ER, while some aircraft will also new Air New Zealand livery applied.

Air New Zealand deputy chief executive Norm Thompson said the upgrade is part of the airline’s commitment to maintaining a young and modern fleet.

“Air New Zealand was the first to deliver a lie-flat sleeping experience to our Economy customers through our hugely successful Skycouch product, and we are excited about enabling many more customers to experience this on our 777-200ERs,”he said.
