Singapore Airlines celebrated the fifth anniversary of the A380s inaugural flight from Singapore to Sydney this week.

In October 2007 SIA became the first carrier to operate the largest passenger aircraft on international routes.

Since its inception, SIA has carried over nine million passengers on 24,000 A380 flights.

“We were so excited to be the first airline to introduce the A380 to much fanfare and five years on, the excitement around our A380 services continues, more recently with the introduction of a second daily service to Melbourne,” SIA regional vice-president South West Pacific Subhas Menon said.

As part of its fleet renewal strategy, SIA has ordered five additional Airbus A380s and another 20 A350s, valued at US$7.5 billion with deliveries slated to begin in 2017.

SIA currently operate 19 A380s to 10 destinations worldwide, with London being the busiest route with 3 daily A380 flights, followed by Sydney and Melbourne with double daily A380 services.

In related news, SIA will surrender its title of ‘world’s longest commercial flight’ to Qantas after ceasing its nonstop service between Singapore and Newark next year, a distance of approximately 15,300 kilometres.
