HIV travel restrictions are ‘inhumane’: Kenya Airways

Kenya Airways’ chief executive has signed on to fight against “inhumane” laws that prevent people living with HIV/Aids from travelling freely.

Joining 44 other bosses from global organisations, the World Aids Day CEO campaign turns the spotlight and calls on countries with laws restrict entry, stay and travel people based on their HIV status.

According to GBC Health, there are currently 45 countries across the world with laws still in place that impose travel restrictions based on HIV status.

The airline’s chief executive Dr Titus Naikuni said freedom of movement is “one of the inalienable human rights” and described discrimination against health status as “retrogressive and oppressive”.

“This is why we have added our voice to this campaign,” Dr Naikuni said.

Earlier this year, delegates at the International AIDS Conference said travel restrictions imposed on people with HIV was a result of fear and should be rescinded immediately.
