Air India has confirmed after a 16-year hiatus, it will resume run direct flights between India and Australia.
Commencing 29 August, the airline said it will use its new fleet of 787s to commence four-times weekly services between Delhi-Sydney-Melbourne and three-days weekly flights between Delhi-Melbourne-Sydney, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.
Air India commercial director Deepak Brara said the airline made the decision to divide direct services between Sydney and Melbourne, in order to give “both cities the benefits of non-stop services”.
Melbourne Airport chief executive Chris Woodruff added the new services would help strengthen ties between India and Victoria, and will help the state tap into one of the “fastest growing markets”.
In other Air India news, the airline is said to be looking for a codeshare tie-up with Qantas Airways.
