Papua New Guinea has posted another record number of overseas arrivals with a 25% increase in arrivals from Australia in the first quarter of 2010, according to the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority.
Australia contributes more than half the total number of short-term international visitor arrivals to Papua New Guinea. Around 34% of these travellers are visiting for a holiday and this leisure segment is continuing to grow.
Vera Huntink the marketing manager for Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority Australia says PNG is appealing to adventurous Australians with an increasing range of new product.
?Although PNG is most famous for the Kokoda Track, a new range of trekking experiences such as the Lark Force Track are proving popular with amazing scenery, war history and the opportunity to experience local village life,? Vera said.
?Trekking has long been a draw-card for Australians but growing numbers are attracted by the world-class diving, surfing, fishing and bird watching, and they are combining these activities with the chance to experience a truly fascinating culture.?
With the festival season in Papua New Guinea commencing in June, more Australians are expected to visit in the coming months to experience these vibrant cultural displays.
Papua New Guinea?s festival season runs each year from June to October providing a photogenic explosion of colour and sound for visitors. Festivals such as the Goroka and Mt Hagen Shows are world famous and bring together thousands of locals who have maintained a largely traditional way of life.
