SYDNEY- Australia remains one of the most dynamic countries in outbound travel, despite a population of only 28 million inhabitants. They are currently 8.5 million of Australian travellers, with Asia being the favourite continent with 3.87 million of travellers, a market share of 46%. Australians’ favourite international destination remains however New Zealand which is the only destination attracting over a million visitors per year. However Indonesia is slowly approaching the million travellers.
In 2012/13, the Australian government estimates that 910,000 Australians visited the Indonesian archipelago, mostly to the island of Bali. According to forecasts, Indonesia is likely to welcome over a million Australians in fiscal year 2015-2016. The USA is on pair with Indonesia and could also generate a million travellers by 2015/2016. Thailand is the fourth largest destination for Australian travellers with over 600,000 visitors in fiscal year 2012-2013.
Europe – a traditional destination for many decades- continues to be a strong magnet for Australians. In 2012-13, over 1.32 million Australian travellers went to Europe, from which almost 40% visit the UK.
Until 2021-22, Australian outbound will grow by almost 35% while outbound to Asia will continue to rise more rapidly at 42.1%.
