Report Recommends Tourism New Zealand To Undergo Structural Changes

Tourism New Zealand is about to undergo a massive shake-up with reports indicating that the sector will soon be fused into the Ministry of Economic Development?s portfolio.

The proposed move is based on the recommendations outlined in a report by consultants, Martin Jenkins, following a review of the Government?s role in the sustainable development of the tourism sector.

Headlined by Prime Minister, John Key, who is also the Minister of Tourism, the division is currently operating as a semi-autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Economic Development.

A spokesperson for Mr Key indicated that a formal announcement regarding the Ministry?s future would be made within the next few days however refused to discuss what the new strategies would be.

No matter the approach those working in the industry believe the structural changes will likely result in job losses as well as the tourism sector losing its influence in Government.

Despite the concerns Tourism Industry Association (TIA) chief executive Tim Cossar confirmed that Mr Key has pledged to maintain Tourism New Zealand?s dominant role in any part of government under his leadership.

?We?ve taken his word on things so far and he?s been pretty right. So we?ll take his word on this one as well,? said Mr Cossar.

According to Mr Cossar, the TIA?s preference is for the tourism sector to operate in its present set-up however the organisation would work constructively with Ministry of Economic Development if the changes take place.

And he believes this will happen.

Already since the beginning of the year Mr Key has lost some of his 30 original staff members, with none of the positions replaced by new personnel.

?It seems pretty clear that there?s going to be some change,? adds Cossar.
