The Selangor government has invited Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen to visit the Paya Indah Wetlands in Dengkil, near here to look for herself the actual situation in the area.
The Chairman of the Selangor State Committee on Tourism, Consumerism and Environment, Elizabeth Wong said Ng's statement yesterday that the recreation park might no longer be promoted as a tourism product if the situation there were affected by excessive sand mining was disappointing.
She said the number of tourists visiting Paya Indah Wetlands had increased from 9,700 in the months of October to December 2008, to 24,527 for the corresponding period in 2009, and 11,800 visitors up to June 2010.
"This means that the average number of visitors did not decline, but if the minister frequently made inaccurate statements on the situation in the Paya Indah Wetlands, the number of visitors will certainly drop," she told reporters after the weekly State Executive Council meeting on Wednesday.
Wong said the overall area of the recreation park was 3,100 hectares while the area affected by sand mining was too small and on the fringes of the area.
