HANOI Vietnam Railway Corporation will install wireless Internet on several north-south express trains starting this month.
Hanoi Railway Passenger Transport Company deputy general director, Nguyen Van Binh, told local media that passengers on trains plying the north-south route will be able to stay connected when Vietnam Railway Corporation launches free Wi-Fi.
The Hanoi rail service is a subsidiary of VRC.
inside no 3“Free Wi-Fi will be available on cross-country trains SE 1, 2, 3, 4 from 20 January in time for the peak Lunar New Year (Tet) travel season starting 19 February,” he said.
The State-owned corporation is partnering with the military-run telecom firm Viettel to offer free Internet service as a pilot project, which could be expanded to other trains in the future.
“Viettel will install hotspots along the north-south railway to ensure stable Internet access for passengers, but there will be no Wi-Fi signals when trains pass through tunnels,” he cited.
The scheme is part of a project to improve service quality of the railways making it a leader in ASEAN.
The railway corporation has already launched Wi-Fi at some major stations such as HCMC and Hanoi.
