CHIANG MAI wChiang Mai International Airport will expand to increase its capacity to accommodate a boom in passenger traffic.
Airports of Thailand’s Regional Airports’ senior executive vice president, Samai Chantorn, said the company has a plan to expand capacity by 2016.
The first task, which is already underway, is the extension of parking bays, he said.
Other projects, due within this year, are the extension of domestic and international departure halls by 400 and 350 square metres respectively and construction of a parking lot capable of handling up to 320 vehicles.
inside no 1In the medium-term plan, the domestic departure hall will be extended by 1,600 square metres and the international passenger terminal building by 20,000 square metres due to be completed next year.

The expansion is in response to a rapid increase in tourists to Chiang Mai.
Chiang Mai International Airport earned THB1,228.86 million in income, last year, representing a 35% increase.
The airport also served 52,642 flights and 6.63 million passengers, a 21% increase over 2013.
Currently, there are seven airlines providing 14 flights on domestic routes operating at the airport and 20 international airlines serving 18 overseas destinations. On average, there are 191 flights daily.
