BANGKOK Thailand will celebrate the annual Songkhran Festival Monday, 13 April through to Wednesday, 15 April.
The celebration will start with families paying respects to elders by sprinkling water on their hands or heads.
However, thousands of tourists are visiting Thailand to enjoy the water battles that take place in every village and town. Pattaya celebrates the festival a week later.
April is one of the hottest months of the year with temperatures reaching 40 degrees centigrade in some parts of the country. On average the temperatures are in the 33 to 35 degree centigrade range.
inside no 4Humidity is high in Bangkok and in the central plains adding to the discomfort. Visitors are advised to drink plenty of water, while touring and stay in the shade as much as possible.
Water throwing continues for three days and always in daylight. It is not customary to throw water after sunset. Also, authorities have warned against using ice cubes and strong jets of water to spray people travelling in buses or those who need to travel to and from work.
The holiday is also celebrated in Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar.
