The number of mainland tourists to Taiwan in 2010 is expected to reach 1 million, said an official with the Taiwan Strait Tourism Association said Monday, noting that more efforts will be placed on their safety after some mainland tourists were killed in Typhoon Megi-triggered landslides.
The number of tourists to Taiwan was 979,000 as of Nov. 4, and with an average of 4,000 tourists daily, the total number will hit 1 million on Nov. 9, said Yang Ruizong, head of the association's Beijing Office.
This number does not include members of business delegations to Taiwan from the mainland, said Yang. Concerning the accident which took the lives of the 20 tourists, Yang said that "Taiwan has a well-developed rescue system and in the future more emphasis will be put on ensuring the safety of tourists."
