Phitsanulok lacks air connections

Tourism officials in Phitsanulok believe the province needs more airline services to attract foreign tourist that represent just 30% of the overall visits to the province. According to Tourism Authority of Thailand Phitsanulok office director, Nuan Sarnsorn, “about 70% of all tourists visiting Phitsanulok are Thais but the province is ideally located on the route north and could eventually be combined with overland trips to Laos and Vietnam to the east.”

The main drawback is the lack of airlines serving the city. Tourist have to rely on just  Nok Air, while they have a much wider choice of airlines and frequencies to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, served by both low-cost airlines and the national airline.“Domestic tourism in this province begins to build up in late October and increases throughout the cool season to February,” he said. “But the emphasis is on domestic tourism and we would like to balance that off with more international visits.”

Phitsanulok is the gateway to the ancient town of Sukhothai that is home to a world heritage site. The town is also part of a developing East-West Economic Corridor that links Thailand with Laos and Vietnam to the east and the border with Myanmar in the west. This week the town is hosting the Indochina Fair and the Jet Ski King’s Cup World Prix 1 to 5 December.
