North India is one of the most popular destination choices for potential travellers during the 2010/2011 festive season, according to a recent survey. An Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) survey revealed that over 55 percent of travellers would prefer to be in northern Indian cities when welcoming in the New Year. The survey of 3,500 tourists was conducted in 10 major cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Thiruvananthapuram and Ahmedabad, according to The Hindu.

35 percent of those surveyed listed coastal destinations such as Goa, Kerala, Rameshwaram, Puducherry and Thiruvananthpuram as their choice of holiday hotspot.ASSOCHAM said hotels and restaurants in Northern Indian destinations were experiencing a festive season business boom, due to the nation’s improved economic climate.Palolem beach - Goa, India.ASSOCHAM secretary general D.S. Rawat agreed with ASSOCHAM’s observations.

“The festive season and an increase in domestic tourism should be given credit for this surge in hotel occupancy and the hotels are cashing in on the increased spending power of the individuals and buoyant festive mood,” he said. The increase in popularity has caused a 35-40 percent increase in tariffs for hotel accommodations.“Food and beverage costs are also running up by nearly 20-25 percent.
“Almost all hotel owners have boosted their prices by significant margin as the tourists jostle to enjoy the New Year fever,” Mr. Rawat added.
