LAMPANG The northern province of Lampang introduced, Monday, a meter system for its famous horse-drawn carriages to ensure fair prices for travellers.
According to Lampang province and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports’ Lampang Office, two horse-drawn carriages are using meters to test the system.
There are two alternatives offered to tourists. They can use the meter service for a free-and-easy tour of the town or pay a flat fee for an extended trip with a fixed number of stops on a route covering the main historical temples.
The meter has a flag down of THB30, and costs THB7 per minute. Time and distance covered governs the meter’s calculation.
On the town’s historical routes the fee is THB200 for a short version, THB300 for the full circuit and THB400 for a one-hour trip around the city. Three-hour trips cost THB1,000. There are six routes for the three-hour trips.
Horse-drawn carriages are an iconic attraction in Lampang and most tourists will use them for the tour of the town’s historical temples.
Lampang is one of the 12 hidden gem destinations that the country has promoted to encourage travellers to visit secondary destinations rather than just the main ones, such as Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai.
