Laguna race dates announced

PHUKET Organisers of Phuket’s iconic sports event, Laguna Phuket Triathlon (LPT), Laguna Phuket announced, last week, the 24th edition will be scheduled Sunday 19 November 2017.

The event will comprise of signature race distances of a 1.8 km swim, 50 km bike and 12 km run.

Registration for the 2017 race opened 4 January at www.lagunaphukettri.com.

Interested athletes are advised to book their slot as soon as possible to enjoy an early bird discount.

The TV show of the 2016 LPT race, which took place on Sunday 20 November, was broadcasted in Thailand last week on the Thai TV Channel 7.

Established in 1994 the event introduced sports tourism to the southern Thailand island and is now recognised as Asia’s longest standing triathlon race.

The 2016 edition saw more than 1,100 athletes representing over 40 nationalities gathered at Laguna Phuket to participate in the race.

From the field of more than 1,100 athletes, families, race fans and supporters travelling to Phuket, the race is estimated to generate more than THB74 million spending in the tourism segment for Phuket province.

Hotel room and food and beverage revenue generated for hotels and business units in Laguna Phuket is estimated at THB9 million during the race weekend.

Just one month before the 2016 race, “Laguna Phuket Triathlon” was awarded Best Amateur Sports Event of the Year in Thailand (Bronze) at Sports Industry Awards & Conference (SPIA Asia) 2016 in Bangkok, Thailand.

SPIA Asia 2016 saw an increase in both the sports conference and awards gala formats to now include 17 Asian countries across 19 distinct categories, both professional and community focused.
