Nha Trang tackles Chinese manners

KHANH HOA Nha Trang Tourism Association will bring together travel agencies serving Chinese tourists to form a ‘club’ to improve service for the country’s largest market.

Tuoi Tre News quoted the association deputy chairman, Nguyen Van Thanh, saying the club is a must if agents are to improve the quality of service offered to Chinese tourists.

Nha Trang has emerged as a favourite destination for Chinese holiday makers, but there have been growing complaints.

The municipal tourism association discussed the complaints, last Tuesday, with over 20 travel agencies and recommended that they form a ‘welcome club’ for Chinese tourists to resolve the issues that have arisen from increased numbers arriving in Nha Trang, the report said.

Chinese tourists are criticised for their lack of manners and poor behaviour in public places. The same complaints emerge in most destinations focusing on this market, usually citing poor manners, the habit of spitting and urinating in public, being noisy and impolite at religious places and heritage sites.

The same complaints rarely arise in a Singapore, a popular destination with Chinese where laws and penalties regarding behaviour are strictly enforced for both locals and foreign tourists.

There is also a lack of Chinese-speaking Vietnamese tour guides, which has led to the employment of Chinese nationals as tour guides. They are accused of presenting inaccurate and distorted accounts of Vietnamese history and culture.

Khanh Hoa welcomed 4.2 million international visitors, mostly Chinese nationals, between 2010 and June 2016, according to a report by the provincial People’s Council.
