Cover up call at ancient towers

KHANH HOA One of Vietnam’s heritage sites, Ponagar Cham Towers, has introduced a regulation to ensure foreign tourists cover up when they visit the site.

Tourists dressed in shorts and sleeveless shirts are being issued with overcoats.

Tuoi Tre News reported tourists dressed in shorts and or sleeveless shirts are now being redirected to a counter where officials dispense lightweight overcoats.

Ponagar Cham Towers is an ancient place of worship in the south-central city of Nha Trang.

The attraction’s management head, Tran Van Binh, was quoted saying many tourists arrive inappropriately dressed to visit the sacred towers.

“It disturbs the aesthetic beauty and sacredness of the towers, which embody the local culture and religious beliefs.”

The Ponagar Cham Towers in Nha Trang welcomes between 500,000 and 600,000 foreign tourists per year on average, mainly Chinese and Russian nationals, the report said.

Situated on a knoll at the mouth of the Cai River, 2 km north of Nha Trang, Ponagar Cham Towers is dedicated to the worship of Lady Po Nagar, widely believed to be the originator of the Cham people in southern Vietnam.
